Shafqat Mahmood, the Federal Minister for Education and Professional Training, has called a key meeting of the Inter-Provincial Education Ministers (IPEMC) for Thursday, January 13.
According to media reports, the session has been called to review the situation of educational institutions in the country in light of the growing number of COVID-19 cases. It is expected to result in significant decisions regarding school closures.

As the country enters the fifth wave of the pandemic, the positivity ratio is rapidly increasing. Pakistan has reported 2,074 new cases and 13 COVID-related deaths in the last 24 hours, according to the National Command and Operation Center (NCOC).
With these figures, the national caseload has risen to 1,309,248 and the death toll has risen to 28,987.
In terms of fatalities, Punjab remains the worst-affected province, followed by Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Pakistan’s largest province (in terms of population) has reported 13,083 deaths to date. Sindh comes in second with 7,691 deaths, followed by KP with 5,945, Islamabad with 967, Azad Kashmir with 748, Balochistan with 367, and Gilgit-Baltistan with 186.
