Sindh’s Public Universities to Shut Down From Thursday as Protest

Sindh’s public universities have called a class boycott beginning Thursday to protest the SUBD’s (Sindh Universities and Boards Department(SUBD)

According to sources, the Federation of All Pakistan Universities Academic Staff Association (FAPUASA) took to the streets to protest Secretary SUBD Mureed Rahimo’s decision to postpone the selection board meeting at the University of Karachi.

“If the demands are not met immediately,” Dr. Naik Mohammad, the president of FAPUASA’s Sindh chapter, said at a press conference at the University of Karachi, “a Black Day will be observed in all Sindh universities on Wednesday, followed by a complete boycott of academic activities on Thursday, and the next plan of action will be issued thereafter.”

He maintained that no university will seek approval from the Sindh government’s secretary or selection board.

Another spokesman of the teachers’ group, Shah Al-Qadir, stated that the University Act governs public universities throughout the province. He claimed that by breaking the Act, the Secretary had disrespected the Sindh Assembly and its representatives.

After the selection board meeting was postponed without prior authorization on 3 February, the Karachi University Teachers’ Association announced an indefinite boycott of classes.

The Sindh Governor and the federal government were also asked to intervene because the Sindh government had neglected to take action against the Secretary SUBD.
